Navigating Online Feedback: My Persuasive Writing Experience

As part of my English class, we’re diving into the art of persuasive writing. In search of some constructive feedback, I decided to share my draft in a Discord server, hoping to gather some insights from fresh eyes.

The response, however, took an unexpected turn. One individual harshly critiqued my choice of words, claiming they were inadequate. He also advised me to adhere to the assignment guidelines, which was puzzling since he wasn’t aware of what those guidelines entailed. On top of this, he criticized my reliance on sources like Wikipedia, suggesting that the site’s frequent updates somehow undermined its credibility. I found this perplexing, as I believe that continuously updated information fosters knowledge growth and keeps topics relevant.

His comments teetered on the edge of condescension—it almost felt like he was about to punctuate his opinions with a condescending “bud,” but refrained at the last moment.

Regardless of his remarks, I’m determined to continue refining my essay. However, I wanted to share this encounter and seek broader opinions on the matter. Am I thinking about this feedback in the right way, or is there something I’m missing?

    Regarding the comment about Wikipedia, the evolving nature of its content is indeed one of its strengths. Updated information reflects the dynamic nature of knowledge and current events. However, it’s important to verify facts with additional credible sources, especially in academic writing, to ensure information accuracy and reliability. This practice demonstrates thorough research and strengthens your argument.

    As for the feedback style and tone, it’s positive to maintain a sense of humor, as you did, while remaining unfazed by potentially negative comments. Humor can sometimes defuse tension, but it’s equally vital to remain focused on your main goal: improving your writing skills. Over time, you’ll develop a keener sense of discerning which feedback to incorporate and which to set aside. Constructive criticism should be specific, actionable, and based on a clear understanding of the context.

    It’s also beneficial to engage with a variety of feedback channels. If one platform isn’t providing useful insights, consider speaking with classmates, seeking guidance from your teacher, or exploring other online communities dedicated to writing. Each of these avenues can offer a fresh perspective and balanced criticism that could aide in honing your skills.

    Continue to approach your writing with confidence. Discomfort in receiving negative feedback is natural, but remember that each experience contributes to your growth as a writer. Keep pushing forward with your essay, and let each piece of feedback—no matter how well-intentioned or poorly delivered—serve as a stepping stone to enhancing your persuasive abilities.
