Navigating Challenges in Psychology Studies: A Personal Reflection

Embarking on a part-time Psychology with Counselling course can be an exhilarating yet demanding journey. As a first-year student, I initially found my footing and completed my first two Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) with commendable scores. However, life threw some unexpected challenges my way, leading me to encounter significant hurdles in both my mental health and academic performance.

As the weeks progressed, I found myself grappling with mental health issues that made studying feel overwhelming. Fast forward a few months, and I’m now facing the reality of being behind in my studies—about four months, to be precise. Despite my attempts to stay afloat, I ended up missing one TMA, even after requesting an extension. Today, I find myself with another TMA due—a hefty essay that I haven’t even begun to tackle.

The good news is that I am gradually emerging from my mental health struggles, and I’m committed to catching up. My goal is to submit all my upcoming TMAs and the End of Module Assessment (EMA) on time. However, the impact of having missed two TMAs weighs heavily on my mind.

So, where does this leave me in the grand scheme of things? While it feels daunting, I am learning that setbacks can be a part of the academic journey.
