Opinions on S217?

Title: Seeking Insights on S217: Your Experience Matters!

Hello, fellow learners,

I hope this post finds you well. I’m currently halfway through my degree journey. I originally focused on Natural Sciences with an emphasis on Physics, specifically Astronomy and Planetary Science, but made the switch to an Open STEM track after encountering challenges with MST125. While I’m comfortable with applied mathematics, pure math has always been a hurdle for me. Recently, I was diagnosed with ADHD, which has shed light on my difficulties with concentration, particularly in that area. To tackle this, I found that having a highly engaging tutor is crucial, and I even retook MST124 to reinforce my understanding.

Due to personal circumstances, I took a two-year break from my studies. Now, I’m looking forward to returning this October to complete 60 credits. My passion for Physics is what initially drew me to this field of study, and I’m eager to reignite that enthusiasm.

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences regarding the S217 module. How does it compare in intensity to other 60-credit courses you’ve taken? Personally, I found that tackling two 30-credit modules in a year felt substantially more demanding than handling a single 60-credit course, like S111.

Your insights would be invaluable as I prepare for this next step in my academic journey. Looking forward to your replies!

  1. It’s great to hear about your journey and determination to return to studies in the field of Physics! S217, or “Physics: From Classical to Modern,” is indeed an exciting module that can provide a deeper understanding of various physical concepts, seamlessly bridging traditional physics with contemporary theories.

    Course Intensity and Content

S217 tends to be considered more intense than some earlier modules due to its breadth and depth. While it is designed for students who have completed prior foundational courses such as S111 or MST124, its focus on applying concepts to real-world scenarios and the mathematical rigor involved may pose some challenges, especially if pure mathematics isn’t your strongest suit. Since you have experience in applied mathematics, leverage that to connect with the concepts presented in the course. Here’s what you can expect:

    1. Content Coverage: S217 explores various physics principles, including mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and an introduction to quantum mechanics. This wider scope means that the material can feel more intense than modules that focus on narrower topics.

    2. Math Applications: While you might find some parts of the course mathematically demanding, it emphasizes the application of mathematical principles to physical situations. If pure math is daunting, focus on understanding the core concepts and use supplementary resources such as videos or study groups to help reinforce your understanding.

    3. Project Work and Practical Sessions: S217 often incorporates practical experiments and project work, which can help to contextualize the theories you learn. Engaging with hands-on activities may provide more stimulating learning opportunities and help counterbalance the theoretical aspects of the course, especially beneficial if you prefer active learning.

    Study Strategies

Given your diagnosis of ADHD, it’s crucial to implement strategies that cater to your learning preferences:

    • Active Learning: Engage with the material through active study methods. Try summarizing information, teaching it to a peer, or working through physics problems in study groups. This might help you retain information better.

    • Time Management: Break your study sessions into manageable chunks with specific goals. The Pomodoro technique (25 minutes of focused study followed by a 5-minute break) might enhance your concentration levels and prevent burnout.

    • Utilize Resources: Take full advantage of the university’s support services. Many institutions offer resources tailored for neurodiverse students, including one-on-one tutoring or learning workshops. Engaging with your course tutor can also help clarify difficult concepts and keep you motivated.

    • Stay Organized: Use digital tools or planners to track your assignments and deadlines. This not only keeps you organized but also boosts your confidence as you check off completed tasks.

    Personal Experience

From my experience with similar modules, S217 can indeed feel more intensive than simply doubling 30-credit courses, largely because it requires a more holistic understanding of physics. Engage with the community—forums, study groups, or discussion boards can provide invaluable support and insights from fellow students navigating the same path.

Ultimately, your enthusiasm for Physics is your strongest ally. With the right strategies in place and a supportive network, you’ll find your footing in S217 and continue to flourish in your academic pursuits. Best of luck as you gear up for your return this October!
