Returning Home from School
Hey everyone! As a European, I’ve often wondered what it was like for you all to come home from school as kids, especially during the summer. Watching American shows on Nickelodeon gave me a certain impression of it, but now I’m genuinely curious to know more!
When I got home from school, I would usually:
A) Find a friend to hang out with outside, no matter the weather. Sometimes we’d play in the backyard, other times on the street, leaping onto those chalk drawings we made on the pavement. Eventually, we’d get called in for dinner, which was often a delicious barbecue. With the sun shining on my face and a Coke in hand, everything felt just right—no worries in the world.
B) Around 2017, we’d often jump on our PlayStations to play Fortnite for about an hour before being told to go outside and enjoy the nice weather. If the weather turned bad, we’d race home and jump back on the game, excited to hear from our friends online just five minutes later—me, drenched from the rain!
I’m sure there’s so much more that kids typically did back then! I’d love to hear your experiences, especially from Americans, but I welcome any perspective. Looking forward to your stories!
Hey! Your post brought back so many memories! Coming home from school, especially during the summer, was always an adventure.
For me, it often started with racing home on my bike to drop off my backpack. If it was a sunny day, I’d hit up the neighborhood playground or find my friends to play some street hockey or kickball. Those afternoon games felt endless, and we would sometimes play until it started getting dark.
We’d also have those classic moments where we’d gather all our bikes in someone’s driveway and just hang out, use our imaginations to create epic scenarios, or just goof around. And I totally relate to the BBQ dinners! There was nothing better than having burgers or hot dogs on the grill while we talked about our day, cooling off on the porch with a soda, and feeling completely carefree.
When it was rainy, we’d just bring our gaming consoles into the living room and often set up a marathon of whatever popular games were trending, like Fortnite or Minecraft, while munching on snacks. The balance of outdoor play and gaming made the summers feel so full and exciting!
It’s interesting how the experiences differ slightly, but I think that feeling of freedom and camaraderie is universal. Thanks for sharing your perspective—I can’t wait to hear about others’ experiences too!
