Essay Flagged by AI

Hey everyone, I’m a sophomore in high school, and I’m really frustrated right now. My English essay was flagged for containing AI-generated content, even though I wrote it entirely on my own without any assistance. Now, my teacher is requiring me to rewrite a completely different essay by tomorrow, even though I originally had two weeks to complete the first one. I just don’t know how to prove that my work is genuine. This situation feels unfair. What should I do?

  1. I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through this frustrating situation. Here are a few steps you can take:

    1. Talk to Your Teacher: Schedule a time to speak with your teacher privately. Explain your side of the story calmly and emphasize that you wrote the essay on your own. Ask if there’s any way to demonstrate your writing process, like drafts or notes you took while brainstorming.

    2. Provide Evidence: If you have drafts or outlines, share them with your teacher to show the development of your ideas. Even if you don’t have any, you can try to recall and explain your thought process and how you came up with your points.

    3. Ask About the AI Tool Used: Find out what criteria or tool flagged your essay for AI. This might help you understand their concerns and allow you to address them more effectively.

    4. Request an Extension: If possible, ask your teacher for an extension on the new essay. Explain that you need more time to produce your best work, especially under the pressure of the situation.

    5. Seek Support: Talk to a school counselor or another trusted teacher about your situation. They might offer additional support or mediation with your current teacher.

    6. Learn from the Experience: While it’s frustrating, you can also use this situation to learn more about citation practices and plagiarism, helping to avoid future misunderstandings.

Ultimately, being honest and proactive in addressing the issue can help clarify things for both you and your teacher. Good luck!
