GCSE Subjects

Choosing GCSE Subjects

I’m currently in Year 9 in the UK, and soon I’ll need to choose my GCSE options. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and could use some advice!

I generally enjoy all subjects, with the exception of art. I’m indifferent about R.E. and P.E., and I like all my other classes. However, I’m still unsure about what career path I want to follow—I’m considering something in the medical field, like a paediatric surgeon, but I’m not entirely set on that.

I’d like to choose a broad range of subjects to keep my options open for the future. Here’s what I have to take:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Maths
  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Spanish

For my options, I can choose between:

  • History or Geography (My brother says history is beneficial for many careers, but I think geography might be less demanding and require less writing. Many people have advised against choosing history.)
  • Art, Drama, Music, Materials, Food
  • Sociology, Business, Psychology (I find psychology particularly interesting.)

I know it ultimately comes down to my personal choice, but I would really appreciate some ideas and opinions on which options might be the most beneficial for a wide range of future careers. Thanks!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a great position with a wide variety of subjects to choose from! Since you’re considering a career in medicine, potentially as a paediatric surgeon, having a well-rounded set of GCSEs will be beneficial. Here are some thoughts on your options:

    1. History vs. Geography:
    2. History: Your brother has a point; history can be valuable in developing critical thinking and analytical skills. It also helps with writing and understanding context, which can be useful in various fields.
    3. Geography: If you prefer less writing and enjoy practical applications, geography might be a good fit. It’s also useful in understanding environmental issues, which are increasingly relevant in healthcare and science.

    4. Art, Drama, Music, Materials, Food:

    5. If you have no interest in art and prefer subjects that could connect with future career aspirations, it might be a good idea to skip these options.
    6. Drama and Music can develop soft skills and confidence but may not be directly applicable to your career interest.
    7. Food Technology can be interesting if you enjoy cooking and understanding nutrition, as dietary knowledge is essential in medicine.
    8. Materials Technology could be useful if you’re interested in the science behind medical instruments or product design.

    9. Sociology, Business, Psychology:

    10. Since you’re interested in these subjects, Psychology could be especially useful. It can give you insight into patient care and how to approach healthcare in a holistic way.
    11. Sociology helps understand societal structures, which can be beneficial in understanding public health issues.
    12. Business is valuable for any field, but it might not be as directly related to a medical career as the others.

Given your interests and career thoughts, here’s a recommendation:

    • Opt for Psychology as one of your subjects—as it aligns well with your potential career in healthcare.
    • Choose between History or Geography based on what you think you will enjoy more. If you lean towards geography for the practical aspect, go for that.
    • If you want to challenge yourself creatively while still somewhat relevant, consider Food Technology.

In the end, pick the subjects that you feel you will enjoy and excel in, as this will keep your motivation high throughout your GCSEs. Good luck with your choices!
