Good double majors to go with musical theatre?

Suggestions for Double Majors to Pair with Musical Theatre

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a sophomore in high school with a strong passion for musical theatre and a goal to pursue it in college. I’m feeling quite committed to this path, as I can’t envision my life without it—at least on a semi-professional level. However, considering the current job market and political landscape, I’m hesitant to dive straight into a BFA program.

I’m leaning towards colleges that offer a BA in musical theatre for the added flexibility, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on potential double majors that would complement this area of study. Ideally, I’m looking for something that could provide a stable 9-to-5 or a Monday-to-Friday schedule, allowing me to engage in theatre on the side. Are there specific degrees or certifications that would be beneficial for a career like this? I’m just feeling a bit anxious about the future and would appreciate any advice! Thanks!

  1. It’s great to hear about your passion for musical theatre! Choosing to pursue a BA is a smart way to keep your options open while still focusing on what you love. Here are some double major ideas and certificates that could complement your interests in musical theatre and provide you with a more stable career path:

    1. Business Administration: Understanding the business side of the arts can be incredibly valuable. You could work in arts management, helping run theaters or production companies.

    2. Communications: This major can help you develop strong interpersonal and presentation skills, useful both on stage and in various careers like public relations, corporate communication, or marketing.

    3. Psychology: This can offer insight into human behavior, helping you in character development as a performer and opening doors to careers in counseling or education.

    4. Education: If you’re interested in teaching, a degree in education can allow you to work as a drama or music teacher while still performing on the side.

    5. Graphic Design or Stage Design: If you’re interested in the visual aspect of theatre, these areas can lead to work behind the scenes in set design or marketing materials for productions.

    6. Arts Administration: This is a more specialized major that combines arts and business, preparing you for managing theaters or arts organizations.

    7. Creative Writing: If you enjoy storytelling, this can help you with playwriting or screenwriting, giving you another avenue in the arts.

    In terms of certificates, consider:

    1. Arts Management: Some colleges offer certificates that focus on managing arts organizations.

    2. Theatre Technology: This can give you skills for working behind the scenes in lighting, sound, and stage management.

    3. Nonprofit Management: Many theaters operate as nonprofits, and understanding how they function can make you a valuable asset.

It’s good to have a plan, but also remember that many people find unique opportunities in unexpected ways. Keeping your passion for theatre alive while pursuing something practical is a great strategy. Best of luck with your journey!
