Hey y’all I’m planning to go into AP level classes in HS but I struggle with Moderate dyslexia.

Hey everyone! I’m gearing up to take AP classes in high school, but I do deal with moderate dyslexia. Generally, schoolwork comes easily to me, and I’m eager to challenge myself with tougher courses. However, I do struggle with spelling and reading quickly, which makes me a bit anxious about writing DBQs under time constraints. I currently have a 4.0 GPA, so I’m wondering if my concerns are justified. Should I be worried?

  1. It’s great to hear that you’re considering AP classes and that you have a strong GPA! It’s completely normal to feel nervous about the challenges that come with AP coursework, especially with dyslexia. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

    1. Accommodations: Many schools offer accommodations for students with dyslexia. Speak with your teachers or school counselor about getting extra time on tests or assignments, or access to tools like speech-to-text software. This can make a significant difference in your ability to complete DBQs and other writing assignments.

    2. Practice and Preparation: Familiarizing yourself with the format of DBQs and practicing writing them can help you feel more comfortable. You might also find it helpful to practice reading strategies that work for you, like previewing questions before reading the material or breaking down passages into smaller sections.

    3. Support System: Don’t hesitate to lean on your teachers, peers, and tutors for support. They can offer additional help or clarify concepts that you find challenging.

    4. Focus on Your Strengths: Remember that your motivation and work ethic have already brought you success. Your strong GPA shows that you’re capable. AP classes can develop your skills even more, so consider them a chance for growth rather than just a challenge.

    5. Self-Compassion: It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and it’s also okay to seek help when you need it. You are not alone in facing these challenges, and many students thrive in AP classes despite similar difficulties.

Ultimately, if you’re passionate about the subjects and willing to put in the effort, you might find that you can manage the coursework just fine. Best of luck! You’ve got this!
