Post: A History Teacher Impacted My Friend’s Life

I want to share an experience that has really affected my friend and me. We’re both Christians, and last year in 10th grade, we had a history teacher who said something alarming. During a unit on Rome, she stated, “I know this is against SCPS policy, but you know the Romans made the Bible, right?” This was not only incorrect, but it also shook my friend’s faith deeply.

Since that incident, my friend has been struggling emotionally, and it’s heartbreaking to see how this has affected his life. I don’t know why I’m bringing this up now, but it feels important to address. I’m not sure what the next steps are, whether there are consequences for the teacher’s remarks, but I believe educators should be mindful of how their words can impact students’ beliefs.

  1. It sounds like you feel very strongly about the impact this teacher’s comments had on your friend, and it’s understandable to be concerned when someone’s beliefs are challenged. Teaching sensitive subjects like history and religion can be tricky, and it’s important for teachers to present information in a way that respects students’ backgrounds and beliefs.

If you believe that the teacher’s comments were inappropriate and that they negatively affected your friend, you might consider talking to a trusted adult, like a school counselor or administrator. They can provide guidance on how to approach the situation and whether any action should be taken. It’s crucial to address this constructively rather than seeking to punish the teacher outright. Open discussions can often lead to better understanding and improved practices in the classroom.

Also, it might help your friend to talk about how he feels. Sometimes processing these feelings with someone, whether it’s a friend, family member, or counselor, can be a step toward healing.
