Housing/Roomate advice?

Roommate Housing Advice Needed!

Hi everyone! I’m preparing to head off to college soon, and I’ve just started receiving housing applications since most of the places I applied to require freshmen to live in the dorms. I’m still waiting to hear back from Cal Poly SLO, which is my top choice, so I haven’t fully committed to a college yet. However, I would love some insights on what to consider when choosing a roommate, especially since I might have the option to request one.

Should I consider having a roommate of a different gender? What about someone with different interests compared to mine? Or would it be better to have someone who shares similar interests or is studying the same major? Alternatively, would it make sense to live with a close friend?

I’d really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you might have! Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Hey! It’s great that you’re starting to think about roommate situations as you prepare for college. Here are some things to consider which might help you in making your decision:

    1. Similar vs. Different Interests: It can be beneficial to have a roommate with somewhat similar interests so you have common ground for activities and bonding, but having different interests can also encourage you to try new things and expand your horizons. Think about what balance works best for you.

    2. Study Habits and Major: If you find someone studying the same major, it can be helpful for studying together and sharing resources. However, if your major is particularly demanding, you might prefer someone who isn’t in your field to avoid added academic pressure.

    3. Lifestyle Compatibility: Consider your daily routines. Do you like to stay up late, or are you an early riser? Are you tidy or more laid-back about mess? These factors can significantly affect your living environment, so seeking a roommate with compatible habits can make a big difference.

    4. Friendship vs. New Experiences: If you live with a close friend, it might be comforting, but it can also be challenging if you end up needing some space. A new roommate can lead to new friendships and experiences, but make sure you can establish mutual respect and communication.

    5. Gender Considerations: If your college allows for opposite-gender roommates and you’re comfortable with it, this can be a great option. Often, it helps to minimize drama, but it ultimately depends on your comfort level and personal preferences.

    6. Communication is Key: Whomever you choose, having open communication early on about habits, hobbies, and boundaries can help set a positive tone for your living situation.

Once you decide, be clear about your preferences in any roommate matching forms, and don’t hesitate to reach out for a conversation if you can beforehand. Good luck with your college applications and decisions!
