HS courses for CS/Physics majors?

Courses for CS/Physics Majors?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a sophomore in high school with plans to major in Computer Science and minor in Physics (or the other way around).

Right now, I’m taking AP Calculus AB and AP Physics 1, and I’ve earned straight A’s in both classes for the first semester. The only blemish on my record is a B in chemistry from my freshman year, which has me a bit worried about how it might impact my chances for a physics major.

As I prepare for my junior year, I’m trying to finalize my course selection. Here’s what I’m thinking of taking:

  • AP Literature
  • Civics/Contemporary World Problems
  • Spanish 4
  • Special Topics in Computer Science
  • Advanced Calculus
  • AP Physics C
  • (I still need to choose one more elective)

For my 7th-period elective, I’m considering:
1. AP Physics (Electricity & Magnetism)
2. A Running Start program, where I could take Thermodynamics, Data Structures, and Networking.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on which option would better benefit me in pursuing a CS or Physics major. I’m feeling a bit anxious since this junior year transcript will be crucial for college applications! 🙁 Thanks in advance for any advice!

  1. It sounds like you’re already on a great track with your coursework, and your strong performance in AP Calculus AB and AP Physics 1 is commendable!

Regarding your concern about the B in chemistry, while maintaining a high GPA is important, many colleges understand that one lower grade doesn’t define your abilities or future potential. Make sure to highlight your strengths in math and physics in your applications, and consider mentioning any relevant projects or experiences that showcase your interest in these fields.

For your elective choice, both options have their own benefits:

    1. AP Physics Electricity & Magnetism: This course would deepen your understanding of fundamental physics concepts that are critical in many areas of physics, especially if you’re considering a physics major. It’s directly relevant to topics you’d cover in college physics courses and may also provide you with a solid foundation for advanced physics topics.

    2. Running Start: Taking courses like thermodynamics, data structures, and networking at a college level can give you a head start on college coursework. This option can also provide you with a taste of the college experience, which is valuable. Data structures is particularly important for computer science, as it’s foundational to algorithm design and problem-solving in programming.

Ultimately, the best choice may depend on where your interests lie more: Would you prefer to strengthen your physics knowledge or advance your computer science skills? If you’re leaning more towards CS, the running start option could be very beneficial. However, if you feel confident about your physics foundation and are curious about advanced topics, AP Physics Electricity & Magnetism is an excellent choice.

Whatever you decide, make sure to stay balanced and take time for extracurricular activities or personal projects that showcase your passion for CS and physics as well. Good luck with your decisions; you’re doing great!
