It’s completely fine for you to attend a PWI (Predominantly White Institution) as a Black girl! Many students of color navigate these environments and have diverse experiences.
While some individuals have faced challenges like feeling isolated or encountering microaggressions, others find supportive communities through student organizations, cultural events, and allyship from professors and peers. It can be beneficial to seek out those communities and resources on campus that align with your identity and experiences.
Here are a few things to consider:
Community: Look for Black student unions or cultural organizations that can offer support and a sense of belonging. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can help you feel more at home.
Faculty Support: Identify faculty members who advocate for diversity and inclusion. Having mentors who understand your perspective can make a big difference in your experience.
Advocacy: Be prepared to advocate for yourself and others. Sometimes, you may need to speak up about issues affecting students of color.
Balance: It’s important to take care of yourself. Engage in self-care and seek out spaces that make you feel comfortable and understood.
Ultimately, your education is what you make of it, and your unique perspective is valuable in any academic setting. Trust your instincts, and go after the opportunity that feels right for you! Good luck with your decision!
