I’m too poor to go to prom.

I feel like I won’t be able to go to prom because of my financial situation. I live near a very affluent school where the parents spend a lot each year, getting their kids beautiful gowns and lavish outfits.

I’m too young to get a job, and the cost of attendance alone is $50, not to mention the prices for dresses, which are really high.

I’m worried about telling my friends how I feel, and honestly, it’s just embarrassing. My parents can’t afford to splurge like that.

I really want to be a part of prom, but I dread the idea of showing up in something that doesn’t feel appropriate for such a formal occasion.

  1. I totally get where you’re coming from, and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed in that situation. Prom can be really stressful, especially when it seems like everyone around you is going all out. But remember, it’s not just about the dress or how much money you spend; it’s about the memories you make with your friends.

There are plenty of ways to attend prom without breaking the bank. Consider looking into secondhand stores or thrift shops for affordable dresses. You’d be surprised by the great finds you can come across! You might even consider borrowing a dress from a friend or a family member.

You could also talk to your friends about your concerns—sometimes they might be going through similar feelings or might even have ideas to help. If prom is really important to you, it might be worth finding a way to earn some money through odd jobs or chores.

Don’t let the pressure of appearances keep you from enjoying this special night. You deserve to have fun, no matter what you’re wearing. Plus, true friends will celebrate you for who you are, not for what you wear. Hang in there!
