Is AP Computer Science Principles worth considering?

At my school, there’s a graduation requirement for completing at least one year of a computer science class. I have some basic experience in computer science, but nothing extensive. I’ve never struggled in my middle school computer science classes, though.

The AP options at my school are somewhat limited, and I haven’t encountered many people who have taken this course to give me their insights. Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. AP Computer Science Principles can be a great option, especially if you have a basic interest in computer science. Here are some reasons it might be worth considering:

    1. Introduction to Key Concepts: The course covers a range of fundamental concepts in computer science, including programming, data analysis, and the impact of technology in society. It’s a good way to build a broad understanding of the field.

    2. No Heavy Coding Focus: Unlike AP Computer Science A, which focuses more on Java programming, AP CSP is designed to be more accessible. It includes some programming but also covers topics like the internet, data, and algorithms at a high level, making it suitable for beginners.

    3. Creativity and Projects: The course allows for creative expression through projects, so you can explore areas that interest you, like app development or data investigation, which can be really engaging.

    4. College Credit: If you score well on the AP exam, you may be able to earn college credit, which is a bonus if you’re considering pursuing computer science or a related field in college.

    5. Future Opportunities: Even if you don’t end up pursuing a career in tech, having a foundational understanding of computer science can be valuable. It’s applicable in many fields today.

Since your school doesn’t offer many AP classes, taking AP CSP can also stand out on your transcript, showing that you’re willing to challenge yourself.

It’s always a good idea to speak with your teachers or school counselor about your options and get their perspectives on whether it might be a good fit for you. Good luck!
