Math Struggles

I’m really struggling with Algebra; it feels like no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get it right. I might score well on assignments, but then one disappointing test grade wipes out all my progress from the past few weeks. I often miss the simplest questions on tests, and my teacher even called me out in front of the class for failing an “easy assignment.” That was extremely embarrassing.

I’m not angry about being called out—I know I’m having a tough time—but it’s frustrating when teachers say things like, “Why don’t you ask questions?” especially after scolding a classmate for not understanding the material after a lengthy lecture. It feels like many of us resort to cheating or copying answers just to keep up; even I find myself doing that. My friends, on the other hand, excel at Algebra and consistently get high scores.

The class often relies on advanced calculators, which I still can’t quite master. I’m in high school and sometimes struggle with basic math—addition and subtraction, I can manage, but multiplication? I definitely need paper for that, and division is a whole other challenge.

I feel like I’m the only one truly struggling; my test scores are dismal, often around 20s or 30s, and a 40 feels like a miracle. When I retest, things usually don’t improve.

What’s frustrating is that this is the only class I’m having trouble with, and it’s supposed to be easier than a regular Algebra class. I’m actually doing better in an AP class that focuses on projects, even though I’m not planning to go to college. I enjoy English and love literature—writing essays and analyzing stories is something I genuinely enjoy, and I even write for fun sometimes. History and geography interest me too (though geography can be hit or miss). I find science enjoyable, and while procrastination can hold me back, I’m able to grasp concepts fairly quickly. I’m also starting to improve in art-related subjects, which is surprising given that I’ve historically disliked them.

I just needed to vent after today. I breezed through an essay, had a good day in some classes, and completed a project, but Algebra just feels like it’s dragging me down.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way about Algebra. It sounds really frustrating to put in so much effort and then feel like it all gets overshadowed by a single test. It’s clear that you have strengths in other subjects, and it’s great to hear that you enjoy English and science—those are valuable skills to have!

It’s also tough when a teacher’s approach makes you feel embarrassed or criticized, especially when you’re already struggling. It’s completely understandable to feel disheartened when you’re not getting the support you need. Remember, struggling in one area doesn’t mean you’re not smart or capable in others. Math can be challenging for many people, and everyone has different strengths and weaknesses.

Have you considered seeking some extra help outside of class? Sometimes working with a tutor or using online resources can make a big difference. Taking your time to work through problems at your own pace might help build your confidence in Algebra.

You’re clearly determined and doing well in other subjects, so try to be kind to yourself. Progress takes time, and it’s okay to ask for help along the way. Keep pushing through, and don’t let this one subject dim your passion for the others that you enjoy!

Isn’t it frustrating when this happens? I’m feeling too ill to go to school, but not sick enough to justify staying home. I’m also facing two tests today—what am I supposed to do? How would you handle a situation like this?

I’m not doing too good right now. (Grades wise)

I could use some help right now. I’m currently a junior in high school, and I’m struggling in a few of my classes. I tend to leave my homework until the evening, but I often find myself procrastinating and rushing to complete everything at the last minute. This has led to subpar work and grades. […]
