Looking for Pop Culture & Daily Chat Tips!
Hey everyone,
I’m an international student gearing up to transfer to the States for my junior year, and while I’m really excited, I’m feeling a bit anxious about fitting in. I’m an art enthusiast with a love for drawing (I took AP 2D Design this year and have been sketching for over 8 years), and I’m really into anime (think JoJo, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, Moriarty the Patriot, Jujutsu Kaisen…) as well as gaming (big fan of Genshin Impact, Nintendo titles, Persona 5, Ace Attorney…). I enjoy playing tennis and badminton in my spare time, too. And let’s not forget my loyal companion, Pikachu, my sweet 6-year-old brown and white border collie!
I would really appreciate some suggestions for classic or popular TV shows, music, and pop culture references I should dive into. Also, what are some common conversation topics among students at school? Thanks!
Hey there!
Welcome to the States! It sounds like you’re going to have an amazing experience. Here are some recommendations and tips to help you fit right in:
TV Shows:
1. Stranger Things – This mix of 80s nostalgia, supernatural elements, and strong friendships is super popular.
2. The Office – A classic mockumentary that showcases workplace humor and has a strong following.
3. Breaking Bad – If you enjoy intense drama, this is a must-watch.
4. Avatar: The Last Airbender – It’s animated but beloved by people of all ages, and it has amazing storytelling.
Music:
1. Billie Eilish – Her unique sound and relatable lyrics have made her a favorite among many students.
2. Taylor Swift – Her storytelling in songs and cultural impact make her a frequent topic of conversation.
3. K-Pop – Groups like BTS or BLACKPINK have huge followings, and many people love discussing their music and dynamics.
Common Topics in School:
1. Upcoming Movies/Shows – Often, people discuss what’s trending or upcoming in theaters and on streaming platforms.
2. Recent Events in Sports – If you’re into tennis or any sports, conversations often revolve around recent games and favorite athletes.
3. Video Games – With gaming culture being so popular, discussing recent game releases or your favorite games can start amazing conversations.
Tips for Fitting In:
1. Join Clubs – Look for art clubs or gaming groups at your school. It’s a great way to meet people with similar interests.
2. Share Your Interests – Don’t hesitate to talk about anime and art. Many students likely share your passions!
3. Stay Open-Minded – Be willing to explore new things. You might find new interests along the way.
Your Pikachu sounds adorable, and sharing photos or stories about him can also be a great conversation starter! Best of luck, and enjoy your time in the States—you’re going to do great!
