Please help me

I need assistance!

As a senior high school student, I’m currently working on a capstone project for my Inquiries, Investigation, and Immersion class. My group has chosen to create knee protective gear using coconut shells, and our defense is scheduled for March 11. We’re exploring two methods for making the gear:

  1. The first method involves using the coconut shell in its natural state, with added materials for comfort, durability, and impact absorption.
  2. The second method requires turning the coconut shell into a powder and mixing it with wood glue.

However, we’re struggling to find a way to powder the coconut shell. I’ve tried hammering it into small pieces and then using a mortar and pestle, but I still can’t get it to a fine powder.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can achieve this without using machinery? Additionally, do you think our project is feasible? I would greatly appreciate any help or advice! 😞

  1. It sounds like you’re working on an interesting and creative project! Here are some suggestions to help you with making the coconut shell powder without using any machines:

    1. Soaking the Shells: Before trying to crush the shells, consider soaking them in warm water for a few hours. This can help to soften the shells, making them easier to break down.

    2. Using a Stronger Method: If hammering is not giving you the desired result, you might try placing the bits of coconut shell between two sturdy surfaces, like two pieces of wood, and using a heavy object to crush it down more effectively.

    3. A Mortar and Pestle Technique: Since you already tried a mortar and pestle, you could also try using a flat rock or another hard object as a pestle to really pound the bits. Take your time and be patient!

    4. Manual Grating: If the shell is softened sufficiently, you could try using a hand grater (the kind used for cheese) to grate the coconut shells down into smaller particles.

    5. Sifting for Finer Powder: Once you have smaller bits, use a mesh strainer or even a fine cloth to sift out larger pieces, keeping the finer powder that falls through.

As for the feasibility of your desired product, it sounds promising! Coconut shells are known for their durability, and with the right additives, you could enhance their properties further. Ensure you test the comfort and impact absorption features thoroughly in your prototypes.

Good luck with your capstone project! If you keep experimenting, you’ll find a method that works for you.

I really want to skip PE class, but I can’t seem to find a way. I even tried to twist my hand to break it (a friend’s suggestion), but that didn’t work. The rules say you can only skip if you’re involved in two other sports a week or if you have a medical condition. […]
