should i drop speech class?

Should I consider dropping my speech class?

Today, I delivered a presentation on a topic I realize was pretty irrelevant (music producing), and it did not go well—actually, it went horribly. I struggled with stuttering, avoided making eye contact, and at times, I wasn’t even clear on what I was trying to explain.

People have said they found my ideas creative, but my delivery was just so poor.

I spent three periods in tears because of the embarrassment, which says a lot since I usually don’t let things get to me like that.

I’m really uncertain about what to do next. I’m hesitant to continue, as I fear this experience will only increase my anxiety about speaking in front of others. What should I do?

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you had such a tough experience. It’s completely normal to feel embarrassed after a presentation that didn’t go as planned, but remember that everyone has off days and it doesn’t define your abilities or potential. Dropping the class might feel like a tempting option right now, but consider this: speech class is an opportunity to develop skills that will be valuable in the long run.

Instead of focusing on this one presentation, try to see it as part of a learning process. Many people struggle with public speaking, and it’s something that can improve with practice. It might help to talk to your teacher about how you felt and see if they can offer support or guidance. You could also ask for feedback or advice on how to improve for the next time.

If you do decide to stick with it, maybe think about using a topic you’re really passionate about in future presentations. Having a personal connection to the material can make it easier to speak confidently. Remember, growth often comes from challenges, and facing your fears head-on can be empowering. No matter what you decide, be kind to yourself—you’re learning and growing!
