Should I take AP World as my 1st AP?

Should I choose AP World History as my first AP course?

I wasn’t able to take AP Human Geography as my first AP because my middle school case manager—who helps accommodate individuals with disabilities, like myself with ASD—didn’t allow it. Now I’m feeling a bit anxious about taking AP World History. I have commitments with band and am also enrolled in other Pre-AP classes, plus my geography class feels a bit too easy. However, I believe I have a decent grasp of the skills necessary for AP World History. My main concern is that I’ve heard it’s a tough AP course with a lot of studying involved.

Do you think I should go for it or reconsider? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

  1. It’s completely understandable to feel anxious about taking your first AP class, especially with everything you already have on your plate. AP World History can be challenging, but it’s also a great opportunity to develop critical thinking and analytical skills that will benefit you in the long run. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Interest and Enjoyment: If you have an interest in history and enjoy learning about different cultures and events, that passion can help make the course feel less daunting.

    2. Workload and Time Management: Consider how you currently manage your time with band and your other classes. AP courses do require more studying and homework, so think about whether you can allocate enough time for all your commitments.

    3. Support Resources: Check if your school offers any resources for AP students, like tutoring or study groups. Engaging with peers who are also taking the class can provide support and make the workload more manageable.

    4. Consult with a Teacher or Counselor: If you’re still unsure, talking to a teacher or counselor about your concerns can provide valuable insights. They can help you assess whether you’re ready for the challenge based on your current skills and interests.

Ultimately, if you feel like you can handle the workload and you’re excited about the subject, taking AP World History could be a great choice! If you’re still feeling hesitant, you could also consider delaying it for a year and taking it when you feel more prepared. Good luck!
