Should I take orchestra in my senior year of high school? I know this might seem like a silly question, but I’m going to ask it anyway. Just so you know, I’m coming from a place of struggling with my mental health.
I’ve been in orchestra for the past two years (sophomore and junior year) and I’ve really enjoyed it, especially since intermediate orchestra has been a fantastic experience. However, both of my friends in orchestra are quitting to focus on other electives. I really don’t want to leave, but the thought of going it alone is daunting.
If I decide to stay, I’d likely move up to advanced orchestra, since my teacher has encouraged me to join. This means more concerts and more practice, which could be exciting, but I also struggle with social anxiety and feel uncomfortable talking to the other students, since they all seem to have their own groups. Plus, my mental health is not in a great place right now.
On the flip side, I feel like orchestra is the main thing I could include in my college applications. I also volunteer and have a 4.27 GPA, but that feels less impressive these days.
