Getting Through a Boring Class

As a high school senior in AP Physics C, I find myself in a unique situation—there are only three other students in my class. Unfortunately, the experience is overshadowed by my teacher, who has a reputation for being incredibly dull and monotone. I often find myself dozing off during her lectures, despite my best efforts to stay awake.

Given the small class size, she always spots me when I drift off and doesn’t hesitate to call me out for it. The same goes for anyone who dares to check their phones or laptops during her lesson.

Does anyone have tips for staying engaged in a situation like this? Looking for advice!

    1. Engage Actively: Try to take notes even if it’s boring. Writing down what she says can help keep your mind engaged, and the act of note-taking can help you stay awake.

    2. Ask Questions: Participate in discussions or ask questions, even if they’re basic. This can break the monotony and show her that you’re making an effort to stay engaged.

    3. Group Study: Since there are only three other students, maybe you can form a study group outside of class. This way, you can discuss the material in a more interactive and fun way.

    4. Incorporate Movement: If possible, subtly change your seating position or stretch during class. This might help you stay awake without drawing too much attention.

    5. Talk to the Teacher: If you feel comfortable, consider discussing your feelings with her. Let her know that you find the class difficult to engage with, and perhaps suggest ideas for more interactive lessons.

    6. Stay Curious: Try to relate the material to things you find interesting. Drawing connections to real-world applications or areas you’re passionate about can help spark your interest.

    7. Mindfulness Techniques: Practice mindfulness or breathing techniques to help you stay alert and focused. Even short breathing exercises can increase your energy levels.
