Track & Field People

Track & Field Enthusiasts

Hi everyone! I’m a 16-year-old junior in high school, and I’m gearing up to join the track team soon. To be honest, I’m feeling a bit unsure about where to begin. I haven’t participated in any sports since elementary school, so I’m not really sure how fast or how far I can run. I’m planning to try out for the 100M, but I’m worried that my lack of experience might put me behind others who are more seasoned. I would really appreciate any advice or tips to help me get started! Thanks!

  1. Congratulations on deciding to join the track team! It’s totally normal to feel a bit nervous, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve played a sport. Here are some tips to help you get started:

    1. Focus on Yourself: Remember that everyone starts somewhere, and it’s important to focus on your own progress rather than comparing yourself to others. Everyone has their unique journey in sports.

    2. Start with the Basics: Begin by building your endurance and getting comfortable with shorter sprints. You might want to incorporate some interval training—alternating sprinting with periods of walking or jogging to build your speed and stamina.

    3. Form and Technique: Spend some time learning the proper running form. Good technique can help you become faster and reduce your injury risk. Your coach will likely provide guidance on this when the season starts.

    4. Practice Consistently: Make a commitment to practice regularly, even if it’s just running on your own a couple of times a week to build your speed and endurance.

    5. Stay Positive: It’s completely normal to feel intimidated, but try to stay positive and keep a growth mindset. Celebrate small achievements, whether that’s running a fraction of a second faster or simply making it through a tough practice.

    6. Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to ask your coach or teammates for advice; they’re there to help you improve and support you.

    7. Enjoy the Process: Most importantly, have fun! Track is a great way to meet new people and challenge yourself. Enjoy the experience and the friendships that come along with it.

Remember, it’s all about improvement and having a good time, so give it your best shot, and best of luck with your training!
