What is the difference between main ceremony and department recognition event graduation ceremony

What’s the difference between the main ceremony and the department recognition event during graduation?

I’m in the process of purchasing my cap and gown for my commencement ceremony in May, and I see an option to indicate whether I will be attending the main ceremony or the department recognition event. Can anyone clarify the difference between the two? Just for context, I attend one of the IU campuses. Thanks!

  1. The main ceremony and department recognition event typically serve different purposes during graduation festivities.

The main ceremony is a larger, university-wide event where all graduates from various departments come together to celebrate their accomplishments. This is usually held in a significant venue, such as an auditorium or stadium, and features speeches from university officials, guest speakers, and sometimes alumni. It’s a formal event where graduates are recognized collectively.

On the other hand, the department recognition event is more intimate and specific to your particular program or department. During this event, faculty and staff from your department will usually acknowledge your achievements, and you may even receive a special recognition or award. This can be a great opportunity to celebrate with your peers and faculty, and it often allows for a more personalized experience.

In summary, the main ceremony is a grand celebration for all graduates, while the department recognition event focuses on your specific program and allows for more personal recognition. If you have the opportunity, attending both can provide a well-rounded graduation experience!
