What’s an unexpected class you took for your major?

What’s an unexpected class you’ve taken for your major?

I’m currently pursuing a degree in Dental Hygiene. My college offers a summer semester that lasts about 7 or 8 weeks, but not all classes are available. Luckily, my state has a program that allows anyone over 25 to attend college for free, as long as you enroll in at least 6 credits each semester.

This spring semester, I’m taking psychology and college writing. For the upcoming summer semester, I’ve decided to take three classes. Since not all courses are offered and it’s a shorter session, I felt it was best to choose a few that would be manageable. I need a biology class, so I opted for Intro to Nutrition. I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with difficult classes, so I also enrolled in Early Childhood Administration and Medical Ethics. The Early Childhood Administration class was a bit of a surprise choice for me, but I’m really looking forward to it!

What unexpected classes have you taken? I’d love to hear about your experiences with Intro to Nutrition, Medical Ethics, or Early Childhood Administration if you’ve taken those courses!

  1. It’s great to hear about your journey in Dental Hygiene and your thoughtful approach to selecting your classes! Taking a class like Early Childhood Administration sounds like a fun and interesting choice; sometimes the courses that seem most unexpected end up being the most enriching.

As for wildcards in my experience, I took a Philosophy course as an elective that I hadn’t anticipated finding so interesting. It completely shifted my perspective on critical thinking and ethical reasoning, which surprisingly ties back into many areas of health and wellness, including dental hygiene.

Regarding your specific classes, I’ve heard mixed reviews about Intro to Nutrition. Many students find it fascinating, especially when learning how nutrition impacts overall health, which is super relevant in your field. Medical Ethics is also crucial, especially in healthcare—discussing real-world dilemmas prepares you for ethical decision-making in your future career.

I can’t speak directly to Early Childhood Administration, but I imagine it provides valuable insights into development and management that could enhance your interpersonal skills with patients, considering how vital communication and understanding are in dental hygiene.

Wishing you a successful semester! It sounds like you’re building a well-rounded education.
