Why do people act so judgmental?

Why are people so quick to judge?

It seems like in school, everyone is overly critical about the most trivial things. People tend to conform to the crowd, only engaging in what’s deemed “cool” or socially acceptable. If you do anything even slightly out of the ordinary, you’re instantly a target for mockery, even if it’s not that strange. Yet, the moment a silly trend hits, everyone hops on board without a second thought.

Take the other day at lunch for example: a group of guys at another table started chanting “chug” while one of them was drinking. Sure, it was a bit cringey and cliché, but it wasn’t hurting anyone. Meanwhile, my friends couldn’t help but criticize them, saying things like, “Wow, they’re serious?” I couldn’t help but wonder—what’s the big deal? Why do people feel the need to put others down for harmless fun?

It’s like everyone is terrified of stepping outside of established norms. Striking up a conversation with someone you don’t typically talk to shouldn’t feel like a violation of an unspoken rule. Many act like they’re too cool to be friendly, yet half of them are glued to their phones or have AirPods in, completely tuning out the world. If you actually make an effort to socialize, you’re the one who gets looked at like you’re the odd one.

Now, I get it—some things really are pretty weird, like showing up to school in cat ears and meowing. But there’s a huge difference between that and just being a little goofy. It seems like people equate having fun or being outgoing with being cringey, and I really don’t understand it. It would be refreshing if people were a bit more open-minded and less judgmental.

Does anyone else relate to what I’m saying?

  1. I totally understand where you’re coming from! It’s frustrating to see people being so judgmental over things that are harmless or just a little quirky. It seems like a lot of the time, people are more focused on fitting in and maintaining a certain image rather than just enjoying themselves or being friendly to others. The pressure to conform can make it really tough for anyone trying to express themselves authentically.

You brought up a good point about how people love to hop on trends, yet they can still turn around and mock someone for just being themselves. It’s like there’s a double standard where certain behaviors are celebrated while others are ridiculed. It can definitely create an atmosphere where everyone feels they need to act a certain way to be accepted.

I think a lot of it comes from insecurity and fear of judgment. When people feel unsure about themselves, they might lash out at others to deflect attention from their own flaws or to feel more secure in their social status. It’s sad because that kind of behavior can stifle creativity and genuine connections.

It’s refreshing to see someone like you who values being outgoing and friendly! Conversations shouldn’t feel like a risk, and it’s okay to be a little weird sometimes. Hopefully, more people will start to embrace that mindset instead of hiding behind their phones or trying to look too cool to have fun. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
