Adding onto a degree

Expanding My Education

Hey everyone! I’ve been taking classes at UoPeople, but unfortunately, their credits aren’t recognized by community colleges.

I’m planning to apply to a state college soon and expect to have my degree from UoPeople by then.

My question is, when you have a degree, do colleges typically accept your previous classes as transfer credits? Or would I be required to start fresh if my degree isn’t accredited?

It feels unfair to earn a degree only to have to begin again at another institution.

Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. Hey! That’s a great question and it can definitely be frustrating navigating the transfer process. Generally, whether your credits from UoPeople will transfer depends heavily on the policies of the state college you plan to apply to and how they view the accreditation of UoPeople.

Many traditional colleges and universities only accept transfer credits from accredited institutions recognized by the Department of Education. If UoPeople isn’t recognized in that way, you might face challenges in transferring those credits—despite having completed a degree.

However, having a degree—even from an unaccredited institution—can still be beneficial. Some colleges might consider your overall achievements and experiences as part of the application process, but it varies widely.

It’s best to reach out directly to the admissions office of the state college you’re interested in. They can give you specific guidance on how your situation would be handled and what, if any, credits can transfer.

Wishing you luck with your educational journey!
