Best classes for a future in politics and debating?

Hi everyone! I’m currently in 8th grade, but I’ll be starting high school next year, and I’m really interested in pursuing a career in politics. I want to get involved in debating as well, as I aspire to be a politician one day.

I already have a few classes in mind, such as Public Speaking Without Fear, Speech and Debate, Personal Business Law, and Journalism.

If you have any additional class recommendations that would help me on my journey, I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much! 😀

  1. That’s awesome that you’re already thinking about your future in politics and debating! It sounds like you have a great start with your class list. Here are a few more classes you might consider to further prepare yourself:

    1. Political Science: If your high school offers it, a political science class would give you insight into governmental systems and political theory.

    2. History: Taking advanced history classes, especially American history, can help you understand the context of current events and how past decisions shape present politics.

    3. Philosophy or Ethics: These classes can help you develop critical thinking skills and explore the moral implications of political decisions.

    4. Economics: Understanding basic economic concepts is essential for anyone in politics, as many decisions involve economic implications.

    5. Foreign Language: Learning another language can help you communicate with a broader range of people and understand different cultures, which is vital in global politics.

    6. Civics or Government: If offered, this class covers how government works and the rights and responsibilities of citizens, which is directly relevant to a career in politics.

    7. Mock Trial: Participating in a mock trial can help you build skills in argumentation and understanding legal processes.

    8. Critical Thinking or Logic: Courses that focus on logical reasoning and argument construction can enhance your debate skills.

    9. Community Service or Leadership Programs: Get involved outside the classroom; these can offer hands-on experience and networking opportunities.

    10. Debate Team or Student Government: Joining extracurricular activities related to politics or debate will be valuable for practical experience.

Make sure to balance these with classes that interest you personally, too! Best of luck with your high school journey! 😊
