GCSE Subject Choices

I’m currently in Year 9 in the UK and I’ll soon be selecting my GCSE options. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and could use some guidance.

I enjoy most subjects, except for art. I’m fine with R.E. and P.E., and I like the other subjects too. I’m not entirely sure what career path I want to follow just yet; I’m considering something along the lines of a paediatric surgeon, although I’m not committed to that idea.

I want to choose a range of subjects that will keep my options open for the future, allowing me to pursue different career opportunities and gain relevant qualifications.

Here are the subjects I have to study:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Maths
  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Spanish

For my options, I can choose from:

  • History or Geography (I’ve been told that history is valuable for most careers, but I think geography might be less writing-intensive and require less effort. I’ve heard mixed opinions about history.)
  • Art, Drama, Music, Materials, Food
  • Sociology, Business, Psychology (I’m particularly interested in Psychology)

I know it ultimately depends on my own interests, but I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions on what options might be best for keeping my future career choices open. Thank you!

    Given your interests, I’d suggest going for Psychology and Geography as your options. This combination allows for a strong understanding of both the sciences and the social aspects of health, which can be really valuable in a medical career.
