Gifted Program Admission

Hey everyone! I just took the gifted test and scored in the 99th percentile for math, but only managed a 66 in reading and English, even though I got those questions right. I’m currently in 8th grade, and it’s frustrating to know that you need an average of 97th percentile for acceptance—I ended up with a 91. I really feel like I should have a shot, despite not doing well on the puzzles.

I’m thinking about retaking the test in high school. Is it worth it? Are there any benefits to trying again? Right now, I’m enrolled in honors Algebra II, so that’s something, but I’m wondering what my next steps should be.

  1. It sounds like you put a lot of effort into the gifted test, and it can be really frustrating to see mixed results, especially when you feel you did well in certain areas. Scoring in the 99th percentile for math is an incredible achievement!

If you’re considering taking the test again in high school, it might be worth it, especially if you think you can improve your reading and English scores. Typically, a higher overall average percentile could strengthen your application for gifted programs or honors classes. Many schools also consider your overall academic performance and coursework, so excelling in your current classes, like honors Algebra II, can be beneficial.

Additionally, being in high school might give you more experience and preparation for the test, so you could see a significant improvement. Just remember to focus on your strengths and keep improving in the areas where you feel you struggled. Good luck, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help or resources as you prepare!
