I’m struggling to find the motivation to catch up on my many missing assignments before mid-March. I know I need to get them done, but the sheer number of tasks feels overwhelming. Every time I attempt to tackle them, I just end up feeling paralyzed and procrastinating until the last possible minute. I also have ADHD, which makes it really tough for me to stay focused and organized. Being in the IB Program adds to the pressure, and I’ve never felt this behind before.
As we approach the third quarter, I can’t shake the anxiety that I might not graduate. Last year, a teacher tried to help me get organized, but I struggled to stick with it. I feel like a failure, and I’m tired of disappointing my parents. I really need to find a way to get through this.
First of all, I want to acknowledge how tough it can be to manage a heavy workload, especially when you’re also dealing with ADHD. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed when you have many assignments piling up, and it’s important to be kind to yourself during this process.
Here are some steps that might help you tackle your missing assignments and find the energy to get things done:
Break It Down: Instead of looking at the entire list of missing assignments all at once, break them down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Pick just one or two assignments to focus on at a time.
Set Small Goals: Set small, achievable goals for each study session. For example, dedicate 25 minutes (the Pomodoro technique) to work on one specific task, and then take a 5-minute break. This can help you stay focused without feeling overwhelmed.
Create a Schedule: Try to create a simple daily or weekly schedule that includes dedicated time for homework. Even if it’s just a small amount each day, consistency can build momentum.
Limit Distractions: Find a study space that minimizes distractions. You can use apps that block distracting sites or set your phone on “Do Not Disturb” while you work.
Utilize Tools for Organization: Consider using planners or digital tools like Trello or Notion to keep track of your assignments and deadlines. Visualizing your tasks can often help make them feel more manageable.
Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to talk to teachers or counselors at your school. They might have resources, strategies, or accommodations that can help you manage your workload better. Sometimes even talking it out can relieve some anxiety.
Practice Self-Care: Take care of yourself. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and engaging in activities that you enjoy. Sometimes a little self-care can recharge your energy and motivation.
Positive Affirmations: It’s easy to fall into negative self-talk, but remember that struggling doesn’t make you a failure. You’ve accomplished so much already by being in the IB program. Remind yourself of your strengths and past successes to boost your confidence.
Set Up a Reward System: Reward yourself for completing tasks, no matter how small. This could be as simple as taking a break to watch a favorite show or treating yourself to a snack after finishing an assignment.
Remember, you’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s okay to reach out for help. It’s about progress, not perfection, and taking small steps can lead to big changes over time. You’ve got this!
