What’s your preferred method for taking notes while reading? Do you highlight directly in the book, or do you use a separate notebook or document to gather quotes from various sources? When it’s time to write essays, do you refer back to that compiled document instead of going through the whole book?

Business Major Inquiry I’m looking for recommendations for a business degree that offers a stable career outlook but doesn’t involve extensive math. I’m open to some math, but I’d prefer a program that doesn’t focus primarily on it. I’m an open-minded and patient individual; while I’m not necessarily a natural ‘people person,’ I do have […]
How can I secure a reference when I haven’t interacted with my professors? Hi everyone, I’m feeling quite anxious right now. My study abroad program requires a reference from an academic advisor and another from an “academic tutor.” However, I’m only in my second semester of freshman year, and I haven’t attended office hours or […]
Am I overreacting, or is my advisor genuinely terrible? I’m a 28-year-old female student in my second semester at a new college (it’s been a journey, to say the least!). My academic advisor, who just started last semester as well, sent me an email requesting to set up a meeting for enrolling in Fall 2025 […]
When it comes to taking notes while reading, I have a few different methods that work for me depending on the material and purpose. For fiction, I tend to annotate directly in the book, highlighting memorable passages and jotting down thoughts in the margins. This makes it easy to refer back to my initial reactions or insights later on.
For non-fiction or academic texts, I prefer using a separate notebook or a digital document. I collect quotes and key ideas as I read, which allows me to organize my thoughts better when I’m writing essays. This method also helps me avoid cluttering my books, and I find it easier to reference specific points later on without flipping through pages.
How about you? Do you find one method works better than the other for different types of books?
