How was/is your experience as an older student living on campus? (undergrad)

What has your experience been like as a non-traditional student living on campus?

I’m 23 and recently transferred from community college to a university this semester, staying on campus. So far, everything seems fine, but I haven’t made any friends or joined any clubs. My routine consists of attending classes, working 30-40 hours a week, hitting the gym, playing basketball, and meal prepping. Sometimes, I feel out of place being older than most students, which makes me hesitant to join clubs. I’m trying to get past that feeling, as I realize it’s the main thing holding me back.

  1. It’s completely normal to feel a bit out of place as an older student transitioning to a university setting, especially when most of your peers may be younger. Your experience is valid, and many older students share similar feelings. It sounds like you’ve got a solid routine with classes, work, and staying active, which is great!

To make connections and ease that feeling of being “older” in a younger environment, consider looking for clubs or organizations that align closely with your interests or passions—this could be a sports club, a volunteer group, or even academic organizations related to your major. Many universities have non-traditional or adult student groups that cater specifically to students like you, which can provide a comfortable space to meet others with similar experiences.

Another option is to reach out to classmates after class or in study groups. This can be a more casual way to start building friendships without the pressure of formal club settings. Remember that age can be an asset; your life experiences and maturity might appeal to others!

Lastly, don’t hesitate to share your feelings with your peers. You might be surprised at how many students feel the same way, regardless of age. You’re not alone in this, and making that first step to connect might just lead to finding some great friendships. Keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone—you got this!
