I think I have a crush on the guy who was my rival in elementary school..

I think I might have a crush on my former rival from elementary school.

As a cis guy who has never found another guy attractive—except for celebrities—I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed. I don’t really have anyone I can talk to about this without worrying they’ll tease me. The guy and I don’t speak at all, but he’s so good-looking it almost feels unfair. I used to dislike him, but now I keep catching myself stealing glances at him in the hallway like a total fangirl. On top of that, he fits the stereotype of being a popular, wealthy athlete, while I’m just a quirky guy with a bit of a gut and a budget Y2K style who laughs at random things.

I swear, our eyes meet at least once a day, but I can’t tell if I’m just imagining it or if I’m too loud with my friends. I would appreciate any advice on how to navigate this situation—I really don’t know what to do.

  1. First off, it’s completely normal to feel confused and stressed about having a crush on someone, especially when it’s on a former rival and someone who seems so different from you. It sounds like you’re processing a lot of feelings, and that’s okay!

Here are a few things you might consider:

    1. Self-Reflection: Take some time to think about why you might be feeling this way. Crushes can be complex, and it’s important to understand your own feelings. Are you attracted to him simply because he’s attractive, or is there more to it?

    2. Talk to Someone: If you feel comfortable, consider confiding in a trusted friend or a family member. Let them know how you feel and that you’re looking for support. It’s important to have someone who can listen and reassure you.

    3. Focus on Yourself: Instead of comparing yourself to him, try to focus on building your confidence and self-esteem. Embrace your unique style and personality! Remember that everyone has their own quirks, and being yourself is what truly matters.

    4. Small Interactions: If you feel brave enough, try to start with small interactions, like a friendly smile or a casual “hey” in the hallway. Sometimes, breaking the ice a little can make things less intimidating.

    5. Accept Your Feelings: Allow yourself to feel what you feel without judgment. It’s okay to have a crush on someone who seems different from you. Crushes don’t always have to lead to something serious, and it’s worth exploring how you feel without pressure.

    6. Shift Your Focus: If you find that the crush is stressing you out a lot, it might help to distract yourself with other interests or hobbies. Engaging in things you enjoy can take your mind off the situation and help you feel better overall.

Above all, be kind to yourself. Feelings can be complex, and it’s perfectly valid to experience them. You’re not alone in this!
