I’m currently a freshman majoring in Biology, and I find myself really struggling with math. Even though I’m doing well in my Science and English classes, my math scores have been low enough that I ended up in Intermediate Algebra—now I’m retaking it because I didn’t pass the first time.
I have this fear that if I fail again or need to drop the class, my dad might insist I withdraw from college altogether and pursue a career as an electrician instead. The thought of that terrifies me. I’m passionate about teaching young students about Biology and sharing my love for Paleontology and Earth’s history.
Becoming a Biology teacher is my dream, but I know I’ll need to at least pass Calculus 1 to make that happen.
First of all, I want to acknowledge how you’re feeling right now. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially when faced with challenges in math. Remember, many students struggle with math, and it doesn’t define your worth or your capabilities in other subjects. It’s great that you excel in Science and English, showcasing your strengths and passion for teaching biology.
While math might seem daunting, there are many resources available to help you improve. Consider seeking out tutoring services on campus, joining a study group, or using online resources and apps that can make math more manageable. Sometimes, a different teaching style or approach can make a huge difference.
As for your fears about your dad’s expectations, I encourage you to have an open and honest conversation with him about your goals and passions. It’s important that he understands how much you want to be a biology teacher and how hard you’re working towards that dream. Remember, you are working toward your future, and it’s okay to ask for support along the way.
Your mental health is incredibly important, so if you’re having thoughts of giving up or feeling hopeless, please reach out to someone who can help you—whether that’s a friend, family member, or mental health professional. You are not alone in this, and there are people who want to support you.
Keep pushing forward, and don’t give up on your dreams! With determination and support, you can work through your challenges and reach your goals. You’ve got this!
