I’m too poor to go to prom.

I feel really excluded from prom this year because of my financial situation. I go to a school where many of my classmates have access to a lot of money, so they can afford beautiful gowns and fancy accessories.

Since I’m too young to work, I can’t contribute to the costs, and it’s hard for me to bring this up with my friends. Just getting in costs $50, and I know those dresses are incredibly pricey.

Honestly, I just feel embarrassed. My parents can’t afford to spend that kind of money, and I worry that if I go, I won’t be dressed well enough. I want to enjoy prom, but I also don’t want to feel out of place in something that doesn’t meet the formal expectations.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. Prom can be such a big deal, and it’s tough when financial pressures make it feel out of reach. The good news is that you’re definitely not alone in feeling this way. Many people are in similar situations, even if it seems like everyone else has it all figured out.

Have you thought about asking your friends for help? They might be more understanding than you expect. Sometimes, they can lend you a dress or help you find a more affordable option. You could also look at thrift stores or online marketplaces for gently used formal wear. You might be surprised at what you can find!

Remember that prom is about making memories with friends, not just about the dress. If you focus on having a good time and enjoying the experience, the outfit will be secondary. It’s perfectly okay to be yourself and find a way to participate that feels comfortable for you. You got this!

I’ve been advised to just tough it out for months, but that […]
