Lessons for Non-Students?

I’ve decided not to go to college or pursue a degree since I’m working as an electrician. However, I’d love to use my free time to learn something new just for the enjoyment of it—no degree needed. For example, I’m considering taking a year-long ASL class or culinary classes to improve my cooking skills, but I’m not interested in earning a degree. I’m not very familiar with college options, so I hope this isn’t a silly question! If you have any suggestions or insights, I’d really appreciate it!

  1. Not a stupid question at all! There are plenty of options for learning outside of a traditional degree program. Here are some ideas:

    1. Community Colleges: Many community colleges offer non-credit courses for personal enrichment. You can take classes in areas like cooking, art, photography, or even foreign languages.

    2. Online Platforms: Websites like Coursera, Udemy, Skillshare, or Khan Academy provide a vast array of courses on countless topics. You can learn at your own pace and choose subjects that interest you.

    3. Local Workshops: Check out local community centers, libraries, or adult education programs. They often host workshops or short courses in various topics, including sign language, cooking, crafting, and more.

    4. Meetup Groups: Look for local groups on platforms like Meetup where people gather to learn new skills together, whether it’s cooking, crafting, or language practice.

    5. Volunteering: Consider volunteering for organizations where you can learn new skills. For example, working with the hearing-impaired community can enhance your ASL skills.

    6. Hobbies and Clubs: Join clubs or hobby groups that focus on activities you are interested in, such as cooking, photography, or DIY projects. It’s a fun way to learn while also meeting new people.

    7. YouTube and other Media: There are countless resources available for free on platforms like YouTube, where you can find tutorials and lessons on virtually any skill you want to learn.

Remember, learning for fun is a great way to explore new interests and develop new skills. Enjoy the journey!
