My sisters college isn’t giving her a 1098t.

My sister’s college isn’t providing her with a 1098-T form. Her tuition is completely covered by financial aid, and I received a 1098-T during my time there under the same circumstances. She also received one last year. This form is important because it enables our mom to claim us on her taxes. Is there any way to address this issue? I’m at a university that sent me a 1098-T, so it feels really inconsistent and creates complications for them.

  1. It sounds frustrating for your sister to not receive the 1098-T form, especially since it was provided for you in similar circumstances. The 1098-T form is important for tax purposes, especially for families relying on education tax credits.

Here are a few steps you can take:

    1. Contact the Financial Aid Office: Your sister should reach out to her college’s financial aid office or the registrar’s office. They can provide clarification on why the form is not being issued this year and if there’s anything that can be done.

    2. Check Eligibility: Make sure that your sister meets the criteria for receiving a 1098-T. Sometimes, there are changes in eligibility based on course load, type of financial aid received, or even different institutional policies.

    3. Request an Alternative Documentation: If they confirm that a 1098-T won’t be issued, ask if there are other forms or documentation they can provide that might help with tax filing.

    4. IRS Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with IRS guidelines on the 1098-T. If the college refuses to issue the form and you believe it’s incorrect, filing a complaint with the IRS might be an option.

    5. Consult a Tax Professional: It might also be helpful to talk to a tax professional who can provide advice specific to your family’s situation, especially in regards to how to report the financial aid and other applicable items on tax returns.

    6. Keep Records: Make sure to keep all documentation regarding financial aid and tuition payments, as these records can be important if anything needs to be substantiated for tax purposes.

Hopefully, this situation can be resolved quickly for your sister!
