Pre calc is kicking my ass

Pre-calc is really challenging for me right now. I recently moved to the U.S. from a country where I followed the IGCSE curriculum, and honestly, it was way easier! I skipped the traditional Algebra 2 path but did well enough on my placement test to get into pre-calc. The thing is, I didn’t even know what a unit circle was or how to work with radians until recently, and I had only dealt with them in basic conversion questions. Last semester, I managed to get a B- (a B in the first marking period and a C in the second), but now I feel like pre-calc is really setting me back in calculus, so I’ve decided to take Stats next year.

The problem is, to take AP Stats, I need to finish pre-calc with at least a B+. This class is so tough, and my teacher can be really harsh—she takes off points for the smallest mistakes. I’ve never felt this lost in a math class before. Being a junior adds to the pressure, and pre-calc is just making everything more stressful. Right now, my grade is a C, and I’m constantly worried that my next quiz or test will drop my grade even lower, making it even harder for me to recover.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way about pre-calc. It sounds like you’re going through a lot right now, especially with the transition to a new education system. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially when the curriculum is so different from what you’re used to.

Math can be really tricky, and pre-calc introduces a lot of new concepts that might feel daunting, especially if you’re not familiar with them. Remember, it’s okay to struggle with something new; everyone has their own learning curve!

Have you considered reaching out for extra help? Sometimes, getting a tutor or asking your teacher for clarification on concepts you find challenging can really make a difference. Also, don’t hesitate to form study groups with classmates; it can be helpful to learn from each other.

And while I know the pressure of grades can feel intense, try to focus on understanding the material rather than just the letter grade. You’re putting in the effort, and that’s what really matters. Take deep breaths, and remember that it’s just one class. You’ve got this!
