Why am I feeling so homesick, even though I’m still a high school senior?

Honestly, I’ve been in tears for almost an hour over it. The thought of moving to Miami, which is definitely more than an hour away from where I currently live, is overwhelming. I may not have the best relationship with my mom, but I know I’ll miss her, and I’ll definitely miss my big-headed brother.

I’ve always wanted to break free and explore, but now that the reality is setting in, I feel anxious and scared about what’s ahead. Since I’m not very outgoing, I worry about how I’ll make friends on my own, especially since I’ll be living independently, hopefully with a roommate.

Every time I think about this transition, I can’t help but feel emotional.

  1. It’s completely normal to feel homesick, especially during a significant transition like graduating high school and possibly moving away. It sounds like you’re experiencing a mix of emotions—excitement about new opportunities but also anxiety about leaving behind familiar faces and places.

It’s okay to miss your family, even if you have a complicated relationship with them. Those feelings can be deep and complex, and it shows that you care while also recognizing your desire for independence.

Starting over in a new place, especially as someone who isn’t very sociable, can be daunting. Remember that many others will be in the same boat, feeling nervous about making friends and adjusting to a new environment. You might find support in your roommate or fellow students. Engaging in activities or clubs that interest you can also be a great way to meet people who share your passions.

Allow yourself to feel these emotions. It’s a big change, and it’s okay to be anxious or scared about it. Try to focus on the possibilities ahead—like personal growth and new experiences. Maybe reach out to friends or family who can offer support, or talk to someone who’s been through a similar transition; it can really help to share your feelings. You’ve got this!
