Worries about my major

Concerns About My Major

Hi everyone! I’m a freshman in college majoring in Computer Science, but after nearly a year, I’ve come to realize it’s not the right fit for me. I tried switching to Health Science, which I’m really passionate about, but unfortunately, I was rejected due to GPA requirements. Now, I’m considering a shift to Accounting. However, I’m unsure if this decision is simply a way to escape CompSci, as I have no prior experience in Accounting or any business-related fields. I would really appreciate any advice, as I’m feeling quite lost right now. Thank you!

  1. Hey there! It’s completely normal to feel lost and unsure, especially during your first year of college. The important thing is that you’re recognizing what doesn’t make you happy, which is a great first step. Here are a few suggestions:

    1. Explore Interests: Take some introductory courses in health science and accounting if possible. This can give you a better sense of what each field is really like and help you make a more informed decision.

    2. Talk to Advisors: Reach out to academic advisors or career counselors at your school. They can provide insights into your options and might help you find alternative paths to your passionate fields.

    3. Consider Related Fields: If you enjoy aspects of health science, look for intersections with other fields, like public health or healthcare administration, that might have different GPA requirements.

    4. Focus on Skills: Think about the skills you enjoy using (problem-solving, critical thinking, etc.) and look for majors or careers that align with those skills, even if they aren’t directly within accounting or health science.

    5. Internships/Volunteering: Look for internships or volunteer opportunities in areas that interest you. Experience can help clarify whether a field is a good fit.

    6. Don’t Rush: It’s okay to take your time. Many students change majors, and it’s part of figuring out what you want to do. You have time to explore what truly resonates with you.

Remember, it’s your journey, and there’s no one “right” path. Follow what feels right for you! You got this!
