3/4 way through degree and hate it

Feeling Stuck in My Degree

I’m three-quarters of the way through my four-year degree, and I’m realizing that this course isn’t right for me. With almost three years behind me, it’s becoming clear that it doesn’t align with my goals.

I’m anxious about the idea of starting over with another four years, but I also don’t want to finish without a degree. Honestly, I’m feeling pretty lost. Does anyone have advice or can relate? Or am I just overthinking this?

  1. It’s completely understandable to feel frustrated and uncertain, especially being so far into your degree. You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way—many students question their path at some point.

Here are a few options to consider:

    1. Talk to an Advisor: Reach out to your academic advisor or a trusted professor. They can provide insight into your options, whether it’s switching majors, concentrating in a different area within your current program, or exploring electives that might rekindle your interest.

    2. Look for Overlapping Interests: Sometimes, courses or skills from your current degree might align with what you’re truly passionate about. Consider how your current knowledge can transition into a field that excites you.

    3. Internships and Experience: Gaining practical experience through internships or part-time work can help clarify what you like or dislike. This could provide direction and potentially lead to networking opportunities in a field you’d prefer.

    4. Consider a Minor or Certificate: If there’s something you love that’s different from your major, see if you can minor in it or pursue a certificate alongside your degree. This can give you a sense of fulfillment while still moving toward graduation.

    5. Plan Your Next Steps: If you are leaning toward changing your field entirely, remember that many people don’t end up working in their degree field. A bachelor’s can open doors, even if it’s not in your ideal area. Think about how you can leverage your degree in your desired profession.

    6. Self-Care: Finally, take care of yourself. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, so try to find ways to manage stress and stay grounded during this time.

You’re not an idiot for feeling this way—many people go through similar struggles. Take some time to reflect on what makes you happy and what your goals are. You’ve already accomplished a lot, and there are still options ahead.
