I got my report card back, and I’m sitting at 92% and above in all my classes—except for one 80%. My mom is making a big deal about it, claiming it’s terrible. Just to give you some background, I’m from Ontario, and she’s pushing for me to transfer to a more prestigious school, so her expectations are sky-high this year. When she saw that 80%, she freaked out and said my whole report card is basically invalid. Does anyone else feel like that one 80% could cause such a reaction, or is this a bit of an overreaction? And please, I don’t need any lectures from people looking to criticize—I’m just curious if others experience this kind of pressure too.

It sounds like your mom has really high expectations for you, which can be tough to navigate. While getting one 80% among mostly 92% and above might not seem like a big deal to most people, it’s clear that your mom may be more focused on those high standards.
It’s understandable to feel frustrated, especially when you’re doing well overall. It can help to have a calm conversation with her about your achievements and how you feel. Maybe you can discuss what the 80% represents and how you’re planning to continue improving.
Ultimately, everyone has different standards for success, but it’s important to remember that your efforts and overall performance are valuable too! Balancing expectations with your own goals and well-being is key.
