American students, whats your opinion on the pledge of allegiance?

Hey American students, what are your thoughts on the Pledge of Allegiance? Personally, I don’t recite it because I find the “under God” phrase to be religiously exclusive. As someone who wasn’t raised in a Christian environment or any faith that includes God, it doesn’t resonate with me. If that part were removed, I would likely be more open to saying it.

I remember a moment from elementary school when a teacher forced a student to stand and recite the pledge because he refused. Looking back, I realize I have the freedom to choose, so I decided to stop saying it altogether.

I respect anyone who wants to recite it; it really is a personal choice. What do you all think?

Edit: I appreciate all the thoughtful responses! They’ve given me a lot to consider. 🫶🫶

  1. I think your perspective is really important and highlights a significant aspect of the conversation around the Pledge of Allegiance. Many people share your concerns about the “under God” phrase, and it’s definitely a topic that raises questions about inclusivity and personal beliefs. It’s great that you made the choice to stop saying it if it didn’t resonate with you—it shows a strong sense of self-awareness and autonomy.

I also appreciate your point about the pressure some students might feel to participate, especially in a school setting where conformity can sometimes overshadow individual beliefs. It’s crucial for schools to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions and beliefs, whatever they may be. Overall, it’s interesting to hear different viewpoints on this tradition and how it can be both a symbol of patriotism for some and a source of discomfort for others. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
