Choosing AP Classes
I’m currently a sophomore and in the process of selecting my classes for junior year. I have five required AP courses: AP Literature, AP Language, AP Pre-Calculus, AP World History, and AP Biology. I also have the option to enroll in dual enrollment for science and history, and I’m considering taking dual enrollment for AP World History.
For my elective, I have the choice between African American History or AP African American History. I would appreciate your advice on whether you think dual enrollment is a good option for the courses available to me. Additionally, should I stick with the five APs or go for a sixth one, considering my already heavy course load? This year, I’m taking AP Psychology and AP Government, and I took AP U.S. History last year. Thanks for your input!
It sounds like you have a challenging but exciting schedule ahead! Here are a few things to consider as you make your choices:
Dual Enrollment: If you feel confident in your ability to handle the coursework and the level of independence that comes with college courses, dual enrollment can be a great option. It often offers more flexibility and may transfer more easily to college credit. However, consider if the dual enrollment classes align with your interests and future goals, especially since AP classes can also be rigorous and beneficial for college applications.
AP vs. Dual Enrollment for World History: If you think the dual enrollment option for AP World History aligns better with your learning style or if you’re genuinely more interested in the coursework being taught at a college level, it might be a good choice. However, if you prefer the structured environment of AP classes, stick with that option.
Taking 6 APs: Since you already have a heavy load with 5 AP classes (and you’re succeeding in them), it might be wise to keep it at 5 to ensure you don’t become overwhelmed. Colleges do like to see AP courses, but they also value a well-rounded and manageable course load. Your mental health and well-being are important, so don’t hesitate to prioritize that.
African American History Options: If you have a strong interest in African American history, consider how much time and energy you can dedicate to the course. AP African American History may be more rigorous but could also provide a more in-depth understanding of the subject if you’re ready for that challenge. If you prefer a different pace, the regular African American History could be just as valuable.
Ultimately, choose the path that excites you and aligns with your academic goals, while also considering your overall workload and stress levels. Good luck with your decision!
