Feeling Average
I’m in Year 10 and preparing to take my IGCSEs this year. I’ve got three extracurricular activities but don’t hold any leadership roles. Every time I apply for a position, I don’t seem to get it, while most of my friends seem to be landing opportunities left and right. Academically, I’m struggling too. I’m not doing well in math and just scraping by in Chinese. I perform decently in my other subjects, but I’m not really excelling in any of them.
My friends keep reassuring me that it’s okay and that I still have time to improve, but I can’t shake off this feeling of insecurity. I’m not even particularly good at sports, while my friends have their own unique talents—whether it’s academics, arts, sports, or leadership roles. I’m really worried about university applications and fear I won’t get into a school I desire. I feel like I can’t talk to anyone about this, especially since my sister is an overachiever. I just needed to vent a little.
It’s completely normal to feel insecure, especially when it seems like everyone around you is excelling in different areas. Remember that everyone’s journey is unique, and comparing yourself to others can often lead to unnecessary stress and self-doubt.
While it might feel like you’re stuck in a rut right now, it’s important to recognize that you still have time to explore your interests and build your skills. Focus on what you are passionate about and try to invest time in those areas, whether they are academics, extracurriculars, or hobbies.
Also, keep in mind that universities look for a range of qualities in applicants beyond just grades and leadership positions. They often appreciate unique perspectives, experiences, and personal growth. Consider what makes you unique and how you can present that in your applications.
It’s never too late to improve your grades or find something you enjoy. Seeking extra help in subjects where you’re struggling, like math or Chinese, can be really beneficial. Don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers or peers for support. Talking to someone you trust about how you’re feeling can also help lift some weight off your shoulders.
Lastly, don’t compare your behind-the-scenes to other people’s highlights. Focus on your own path, practice self-compassion, and remember that everyone has ups and downs. You’re still growing and discovering who you are!
