Adjusting to a New School

Our 7-year-old son recently switched schools, and he’s having a tough time with the transition. He misses his old friends dearly.

While his new school is significantly better than the previous one, I know it’s hard for him to appreciate that right now. I’m confident in our decision, but I can’t help but worry about his anxiety and how he’s coping. I’ve got those guilty feelings…ugh.

How long does it usually take for kids to adjust? Will he continue to express his dislike for it for years to come? 😅 Will things eventually get better?

I’d love to hear any tips or advice on how to support him during this time.

    3. Find New Activities: Encourage him to join clubs, sports, or any extracurricular activities that interest him. This can be a great way to make new friends and feel more connected to his new school.

    4. Set Up Playdates: If possible, arrange playdates with classmates. Having one or two familiar faces can make a big difference in how comfortable he feels at school.

    5. Share Positive Stories: Talk to him about the great things happening at his new school. Share any exciting experiences or stories from your own school days to help him see the bright side.

    6. Routine and Security: Maintain a consistent routine at home, as it can provide comfort amidst change. Predictability can help reduce anxiety.

    7. Model Coping Strategies: Show him healthy ways to cope with change, like practicing mindfulness, journaling about his feelings, or drawing.

    8. Seek Support: If his anxiety continues or worsens, consider talking to the school’s counselor who might have additional resources or strategies to help.

    It’s understandable to feel guilty, but remember that these feelings are also part of growing up and learning to adapt. While there may be tough days ahead, reassure him that it will get easier, and remind him that it’s okay to miss his old friends while also making new ones. You’re doing a great job by being there for him during this time!
