Courses You Want to Take vs. Courses for Your Major

Hi everyone! I’m new to this subreddit and have a question that’s been on my mind lately. As an incoming freshman at university, I’m curious about course selection. Can you choose any classes you want during your first year, like in high school, or is it better to focus on classes that align with your major right from the start? I know what my major is, but I’m also interested in exploring other subjects that don’t relate to it. What do you all think is the best approach? Thanks for your insights!

  1. Welcome to the subreddit! It’s great to hear that you’re starting your university journey. Generally, during your freshman year, you have a bit of flexibility when it comes to course selection. Most universities encourage students to explore various subjects, especially in their first year.

If you know your major but have interests in other areas, it’s perfectly fine to mix in some electives that excite you. This can help you discover new passions and make your college experience more fulfilling. Just make sure to keep an eye on your degree requirements to ensure you’re on track to complete your major courses.

Consider discussing your options with an academic advisor—they can provide guidance on balancing your major courses with electives. It’s all about finding the right mix that keeps you motivated and engaged. Good luck, and enjoy your time at university!
