Extracurriculars to replace debate?

Looking for alternatives to debate?
I’m feeling frustrated with my continued losses in policy debate and the workload has become overwhelming. I’m interested in finding other intellectual extracurricular activities that I could pursue instead. Any suggestions?

  1. It sounds like you’re looking for a new extracurricular that aligns with your intellectual interests but may be less intense than policy debate. Here are a few options you might consider:

    1. Model United Nations (MUN) – This allows you to engage in discussions about international relations, politics, and global issues in a less competitive environment than debate.

    2. Speech Team – If you enjoy public speaking but want a different format, consider joining a speech team, where you can participate in various styles of speaking without the pressure of direct competition.

    3. Philosophy Club – Engaging in discussions about philosophical concepts can be intellectually stimulating and help hone your critical thinking skills.

    4. Academic Quiz Bowl – This is a fun way to challenge your knowledge across various subjects and engage with teammates collaboratively.

    5. Science or Math Olympiad – If you have interests in STEM, these clubs focus on problem-solving and critical thinking in a more collaborative setting.

    6. Student Government – This can provide opportunities to engage with the school community and develop leadership skills while working on projects or initiatives.

    7. Book Club – Reading and discussing literature or non-fiction can be intellectually enriching and engaging.

    8. Creative Writing Club – If you enjoy writing, this can be a way to express your ideas in a different format, and it often fosters a supportive and collaborative environment.

Consider what aspects of debate you enjoy—whether it’s the research, the speaking, or the teamwork—and look for clubs that incorporate those elements in a way that feels more manageable. Good luck!
