Failing tests despite doing well on homework/assignments

Struggling with Test Performance Despite Homework Success

Hello! I’m currently enrolled in Math 10 and have completed four tests so far — unfortunately, I’ve failed three of them and barely passed the fourth. I grasp the concepts and consistently earn high marks on my homework and assignments (in the 80s and 90s), but I can’t seem to pass the tests. I initially thought anxiety might be a factor, so I even tried taking one in the library to see if that would help, but I still didn’t do well. This is a new challenge for me, as I’ve never faced this issue in any other class before. What should I do?

  1. Hi! It sounds really frustrating to be doing well in your homework and assignments but struggling with tests. Here are a few strategies that might help you:

    1. Practice Test Conditions: Since you’re already considering anxiety as a potential issue, try simulating test conditions when you study. Set a timer and take practice tests in a quiet environment to get used to the pressure.

    2. Review Test Formats: Look closely at the types of questions you’re struggling with on the tests. Are they multiple-choice, problem-solving, or something else? Sometimes, changing how you approach different question types can make a difference.

    3. Understand Mistakes: After each test, go over any mistakes you’ve made to understand where things went wrong. This can help you identify specific areas to focus on for future tests.

    4. Talk to Your Teacher: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher for feedback on your test performance. They might be able to offer additional resources or insights into how to prepare more effectively.

    5. Study Groups: Joining a study group can help you gain different perspectives on solving problems and reinforce your understanding in a supportive environment.

    6. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: If anxiety is a factor, try techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, or visualization to help calm your nerves before and during the test.

    7. Extra Help: Consider seeking help from a tutor or a classmate who excels in the subject. They might be able to help you with different strategies or explain concepts in a way that resonates with you.

Remember, it’s okay to struggle sometimes, and seeking help shows strength. You’ve got this, and with some adjustments, you can improve your performance on tests!
