Finish this semester or delay graduation?

Should I finish this semester or postpone my graduation?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently pursuing my master’s in business economics and am set to graduate in a year. I’ve been grappling with my major choice; I initially opted for Strategy and International Business, but I’m starting to wish I had chosen the Digital major instead.

This semester, I’ll complete all my classes, leaving only my thesis for next semester. I’m contemplating switching majors, but I’ve missed the deadline for that. My only option now is to drop my current classes. If I decide to switch, I would need an extra semester, resulting in an unexpected free semester right now.

Is this a foolish decision? Should I complete my current major, or take a break and return next year to pursue the other one? I would really appreciate your thoughts!

  1. Hey there!

It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tough spot, but it’s great that you’re taking the time to really think about what you want. Here are a few things to consider that might help you make your decision:

    1. Long-Term Goals: Think about your career aspirations. Which major aligns better with what you envision for yourself? If the Digital major is more in line with your interests and the type of positions you see yourself in, it might be worth the extra semester.

    2. Job Market Trends: Research the current job market in both areas. If Digital is a growing field with ample opportunities, that could sway your decision. On the other hand, if there are strong prospects in Strategy and International Business, you might want to stick it out.

    3. Interest and Passion: Reflect on which subject matter excites you more. If you’re genuinely more passionate about the Digital major, that enthusiasm can translate into better performance and more satisfaction in your studies and future job.

    4. Financial Considerations: Consider the financial implications of extending your studies. Can you afford an extra semester? Make sure to weigh tuition costs and potential lost income against the benefits of switching majors.

    5. Networking and Opportunities: Think about whether you can still network and gain experience in your chosen area while finishing your current major. Sometimes practical experience can bridge the gap in knowledge or interest.

    6. Advising: Have you talked to your academic advisor? They can offer insights and might help you find ways to incorporate courses from the Digital major into your current program or provide guidance on making the switch.

In the end, it’s about what feels right for you personally and professionally. If you think taking a break now to pursue something you’re truly passionate about will make a difference in your future, it might not be a dumb move after all. Best of luck with your decision!
